First, regarding location, Borderless is located in Azabudai Hills, Tokyo, while Planets is in Toyosu, Tokyo; they are operated as separate facilities. As a result, their access and surrounding environments also differ.

Borderless features an exhibition where visitors freely walk through a “boundary-less digital space.” It is characterized by the synchronization of light, video, and sound, with artworks connected throughout the entire venue. Visitors can enjoy the art as they explore the space. The floor is flat and barrier-free, so even small children can walk around safely; however, there are no physical activities such as climbing or running.

In contrast, Planets focuses on immersive, physical experiences, such as walking through water or entering mirrored spaces. With features like textured floors and water-filled rooms, visitors can engage with the art using their whole bodies, making it ideal for those who want to play while exploring and for families with children.

The exhibition content also differs: Borderless features many interactive works using light and video, while Planets offers numerous experiential exhibits where the art changes in response to the visitor’s movements. While there are one or two exhibits shared between the two facilities, the overlap is minimal, so visiting both offers a fresh and enjoyable experience.

In conclusion, if you want to play using your body and prioritize immersive experiences, Planets is recommended; if you prefer to stroll leisurely while enjoying the beauty of light and imagery, Borderless is the better choice. Since you’ll be entering water at Planets, it’s a good idea to be mindful of your clothing and shoes.

How to Enjoy teamLab Borderless

There is no set route inside the museum; visitors are free to wander and discover the artworks at their own pace. Since the visuals and lighting change depending on the time of day, even in the same spot, you can enjoy a different experience every time you visit. While the typical visit lasts about 2 to 3 hours, many people spend 3 to 4, or even 5 hours, taking their time to explore. As you walk through the museum, you’ll make new discoveries, and with so many photo-worthy spots, we recommend allowing plenty of time for your visit.
In the surrounding area, many people combine their TeamLab experience with a visit to Tokyo Tower, a symbol of the city. Since it’s within walking distance, it’s common to see visitors planning a route that lets them enjoy both “art and the essence of Tokyo” at once.
The commercial area within Azabudai Hills is also popular, and many people relax at cafes and restaurants or enjoy shopping and visiting trendy stores before or after viewing the TeamLab exhibition. With a wide selection of the latest fashion brands and dining options, it’s popular not only for the art but also as a “destination where you can enjoy a full day.”

teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM at Toyosu

In contrast, teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM is a digital art museum where visitors can step inside the artworks and experience art with their entire bodies. The museum features areas where visitors remove their shoes to proceed, allowing them to enjoy the artworks through physical sensations—such as walking through water or moving through spaces surrounded by mirrors. Within these spaces, where light, imagery, and sound interact, visitors can experience a sense of immersion, as if they themselves have become part of the artwork.
Furthermore, when you actually visit, the museum is often relatively easy to navigate, and crowds tend not to become extremely concentrated in any one area. This makes it easy to take photos at your own pace within the artworks and enjoy the space in a relaxed atmosphere, which is another major attraction. The exhibition follows a set route, allowing you to experience fantastical works themed around water, light, and flowers while touring the museum in about one to two hours.
